Catalyst Funding: Social Thinky Games

What we’re looking for

We want to support the development of social thinky games

We love games and platforms that give players the space to think and see the beauty in elegant systems. Now we want to see more projects where players are:

  1. Collaborating or competing to problem solve, or

  2. Problem solving to create and share with others.

We’re funding experienced leaders who can bring these kinds of projects to life.

What you’ll get

  • Up to $250K in funding and we expect this funding to be paired with other sources (publishers, investors, grants, etc.) to carry the project forward

  • Developer-friendly, flexible terms

  • Supportive mission-focused funder and ecosystem

What’s our process

Apply using this LINK. We accept submissions on a rolling basis. We only fund pre-production projects (concept, prototpying, early development). We evaluate submissions based on track record, mission-alignment, and go-to-market plans.

FAQ

What makes a game “thinky” to us?

Thinky games are those where players, through discovery, build mastery of deep systems and mechanics. They often spark “aha moments” and rely on creative problem-solving, logical reasoning, strategic decision making, and thoughtful planning. Examples include Baba Is You, Patrick’s Parabox, and Factorio.

What makes a thinky game “social” to us?

In social thinky games, shared problem solving is central to the design. We see two broad categories:

  • Co-op or competitive thinky games (e.g., ibb & obb, Chess, Prismata, Portal 2)

  • Create & share experiences (e.g., Minecraft, Mario Maker)

How does our non-profit status come into play?

Our funding exists to take big risks that align with our program: developing mathematical thinking and connecting kids to math-forward initiatives. We prioritize reach and impact over financial return. We also require that some portion of the content be made freely accessible to low-income kids and educators.

What are Social Thinky projects you’ve funded?

We want games that anyone can play and enjoy, but our focus is on kids ages 8 - 13. We only consider projects rated E and are web accessible. We prefer platform projects with low costs of content creation.

Do you have any restrictions?

We can structure support to fit your project’s needs: revenue share, equity, or (in rare cases) grants.
